WEEK 7 - NO INTERRUPTIONS WEEK

Just a wee reminder that this week is our high standards week so it would be appreciated if any appointments could be scheduled for the following week where possible.

Thanks!

WEEK 7 HOMEWORK

Spelling Words - Contractions
Contractions are shortened ways to write words. We use an apostrophe in place of the letters that we have dropped. Sometimes we join two words together before dropping certain letters:

can’t
couldn’t
could’ve
shan’t
shouldn’t
should’ve
won’t
wouldn’t
would’ve
don’t
didn’t

Basic Facts

20-2 = 18
19-2 = 17
18-2 = 16
17-2 = 15
16-2 = 14
15-2 = 13
14-2 = 12
13-2 = 11
12-2 = 10
11-2 = 9

Clever Contractions

Can you use the correct contractions from your spelling words to write this paragraph in a shorter way? (You might even spot some other words that can be shortened)

“I do not think that these monkeys could have seen me,” thought the jaguar, as he hid behind a huge pitcher plant. “Surely they did not! They could not have because they would not have come down from the trees. They would have stayed safe, up high in the emergent layer. That is what they should have done. I am betting that they would not even hear me if I pounced on them. I will sneak up quietly and I shall not make a sound. It has been ages since I have eaten. I can not believe my luck!”

Rainforest Project
Keep working on your project. A little each week will save a last minute panic! Due date: Friday 19th June

MY GREATEST FEAT

On Monday we began our journey on the road to the FIFA World Cup with the All Whites. The children each have their own pedometers and we are joining people all around the nation who are doing a virtual walk 1600km through South Africa, learning as we go.

The All Whites kick off on the 15th of June against Slovakia and we are all hoping that someone from Room 17 will be walking them onto the pitch!

On the 20th of June they play Italy (yikes!) and then on the 24th of June they face Paraguay (a team to watch!)

Mrs Baird (no stranger to supporting the underdog in the World Cup!) will be cheering them on every step of the way, especially since Scotland didn't qualify (sob!)

Chance Card Challenge:

3 chance cards to the student who can tell me which continents the three teams we face in this group are from.

You can follow our progress and play games on the website:

CROSS COUNTRY

Our middle syndicate cross country event has been changed to Thursday 27th May. The times will be as previously posted. Hopefully you can still come along and give us your support. (Go Van Diemen!!) ;D

Imaginative Writing

How many of your spelling words can you fit into a short story?
Can you think of any other words with a silent ‘k’? Draw a picture to go along with it.

Reading

Since we are reading non-fiction books right now we will only be
changing our books once a week. If you finish your book before then please remember to take a book from the browsing box or read something that you have at home. It could be one of your own non-fiction books or even something from the newspaper. You should try to read something every night.

The Rainforest

Can you label the layers of a tropical rain forest and colour it? Maybe you could list some of the animals that are found in each layer. www.rainforestanimals.net or www.srl.caltech.edu/personnel/krubal/rainforest/Edit560s6/www/animals.html might help you. There are more useful websites listed on our blog.
