Contractions are shortened ways to write words. We use an apostrophe in place of the letters that we have dropped. Sometimes we join two words together before dropping certain letters:

They could not have because they would not have come down from the trees. They would have stayed safe, up high in the emergent layer. That is what they should have done. I am betting that they would not even hear me if I pounced on them. I will sneak up quietly and I shall not make a sound. It has been ages since I have eaten. I can not believe my luck!”
